New iPhone 4 in Thailand by September 2010

iPhone 4

In the early hours of the morning, Thailand time, the new iPhone 4 was unveiled to the public for the first time. Due to the number of leaks, there weren't really that many surprises, but it was good at least to have some of the rumours confirmed.

Some of the major new features include:

iPhone Stills Camera - The iPhone can now shoot pictures at 5 megapixels and has the long awaited built-in LED flash. They are also reporting it to be better in low-light situations which I have found disappointing on my 3GS. Two other new features for the camera include tap focus, where you choose which part of the picture to be in focus, and a x5 digital zoom. One bonus, for Thai people at least, is the front-facing camera which now makes it easier to take self-portraits. I know my Thai friends love taking pictures of themselves at every place that they visit!

iPhone Video Camera -The best news about the video upgrade is that you can now shoot in HD at 30 frames per second and at 720p. This means that it should look acceptable on your large LCD screens. There is also a new app for the iPhone called iMovie (priced at $4.99) that will allow you to do some extensive video editing before uploading to youtube while still out in the field. For some people, probably the best new feature is that you can now make video conference calls over a WiFi network. However, it would seem that it only works if you call another iPhone 4. It would have been nice to link it up with say Skype.

New Look. New Features - The new iPhone is 34% thinner than the present 3GS iPhone at only 9.3 millimeters. It is also now flat and is encased using a much stronger stainless steal alloy. Not tested yet, but this together with the scratch resistant glass, probably means it can survive more falls which can only be good news for people who use the iPhone for live reporting in a war zone. The quality of the display is said to be far greater than before and this, together with the new iBook app, will make it easier to read books and pdf documents.

Longer Battery Life - Some more good news for people using the iPhone in the field is that the battery is 16 percent bigger than 3GS. This translates as 40 percent more talk time. According to Apple, we now have 7 hours talk; 6 hours 3G browsing; 10 hours Wi-Fi browsing; 10 hours video; 40 hours music; 300 hours standby.

Release Dates - The iPhone 4, which comes in black or white, is available for pre-order on 15th June 2010 for the U.S., France, U.K., Germany and Japan. It then goes on sale for the first time on 24th June 2010. The following month the number of countries will increase to 18. These include Finland, Hong Kong, Italy, Canada, Australia, South Korea, Singapore and Belgium.

Coming to Thailand - The next shipping date is expected by September 2010 which will bring the list of countries to 88. Steve Jobs says this is the "fastest rollout ever". We haven't seen a full list yet, but we are expecting the iPhone 4 to be officially released in Thailand in September 2010. Of course, shops in MBK and Pantip Plaza will probably have the iPhone 4 in Thailand by July 2010. But, that will come at a price. Personally, if I was going to upgrade to the iPhone 4, I would wait a few more months when the prices in the "grey market" will come down after the official release.

Visit the apple website for a full list of features on the new iPhone 4.

UPDATE: As predicted, the iPhone 4 is being released in Thailand on September 24th 2010. All three camps selling this handset, DTAC, AIS and TrueMove, will hold midnight launch parties on September 23rd.

  1. I’ve only had the iPhone 3GS six months but think I will upgrade when it is released in Thailand at the end of the year. The selling points for me are the flash, HD video and the longer battery life.

  2. I am going to wait and buy a genuine factory unlocked phone. My current iPhone is a 3G grey market and it is a pain to upgrade the operating system.

It looks like almost everything is better with the new 4: speed, camera, flash, video, resolution, size, construction, noise cancellation, multitasking, gyro.

    I can’t wait!

  3. wait is what i will do too…
im still using the 3g but its hacked to high heaven and i love that..
the newer items need a good 6 months until they can stand up against there forefathers, as is the same with operating systems and most tec tools.

ofcourse for those who just want one to look cool… but dont really use them to the full potential. im sure they will be thrilled,,, looking forwards to its arrival…

  4. the new iphone 4 haven’t flash or a flashplayer!

  5. but it is a new revolution of mobile phones

  6. anyone can give advice on which one is better?
get a sim free handset from overseas and then get a sim only contract?
    or
get one of those packages with true? ideas?

  7. Don’t forget that the new iPhone 4 needs a Micro SIM which is smaller than what we are using in iPhone 3GS now. At the moment, only True and AIS are selling these Micro SIMS. Prices seem more expensive than the regular sizes ones. I am not sure why I cannot just use a pair of scissors and cut my present SIM down to fit an iPhone 4 once it is released in Thailand!

  8. The micro sim are for the ipad use isn’t it?? I don’t know if they have any calling features on there! Anyone got any ideas when they’ll release information on price plans etc etc?

  9. Hi,

Can you confirm that no HTC or Android phone is as good as the iPhone 3 or iphone 4 ?

I’m not interested in anything with a phone except having the biggest screen for internet and the fastest phone to write messages and browse the phone menu, and it seems that Android is not as fast as iPhone, so iPhone 3 or iPhone 4 are the only options ?

    Thanks for help.

  10. In the UK the iphone 4 comes unlocked and usable on any network. It requires a micro SIM. The cost is £499 for 16GB (about 24,000B) and the 32GB at £599 (nearly 29,000B) (assuming £1 = 48B)

  11. By the way the price of a 16GB iphone 3GS has not dropped, contrary to expectation to an article on the front of this website. It is still £449 (21,552B). Apple seem to be trying to limit the availability of the 16GB and are selling the 8GB at £419 (20,112B).

  12. Can someone please advise the actual procedures of getting an iphone4 in Bangkok Thailand ?

    Do I need to pre-order etc ?

  13. You can buy one at inflated prices now in the grey market at places like MBK. We are not expecting an official release in Thailand until towards the end of August. No news yet of release dates or pre-order information.

  15. adding on to my post as above, i’ve posted my iphone 4 ads on ebay. pls take a look if you’re interested. thanks.

  17. I’m currently in US, and will be bringing back limited units of the Apple iPhone 4. Arriving Bangkok on 11-Aug. For more details, do contact addictphone4g@hotmail.com

  18. i have the iphone 4 and the HTC slide android phone … i used them in america … both phones have very similar features (ie., camera pix size, screen size, etc) … i personally like the HTC phone more than the iphone 4 because it has a sliding keyboard that allows me to type faster!

  19. im have the phone, the longer life battery is not that true…. and the “antenna’ problem isnt a big deal…. the media just over exaggerate it…..

  20. Is there a disadvantage to purchasing the iPhone 4 in Singapore? Is the warranty valid in Thailand if you by it in Singapore? Any problems to be aware of?
