Price & Release date of iPad in Thailand
The iPad is finally to be officially released in Thailand on Friday 3rd December 2010 with a starting price of 15,900 baht. It will be sold at iStudio and Apple Shop. The official prices for iPad are several thousand baht cheaper than grey market at MBK and very favourable when compared to USA and UK.

The official prices for the iPad in Thailand are as follows:
iPad (Wi-Fi)
16GB Price 15,900 Baht
32GB Price 18,900 Baht
64GB Price 21,900 Baht
iPad (3G/Wi-Fi)
16GB Price 19,900 Baht
32GB Price 22,900 Baht
64GB Price 25,900 Baht

If you were hesitating before about buying an iPad, now would be the best time. The prices are good and you will have warranty for Thailand. However, there are rumours of the release of iPad 2 in early 2011. This is expected to have two cameras to enable video chat, a USB port and also a better screen. Even if the iPad is released in the USA in early part of next year, it will probably be another six months after that before we will see the iPad in Thailand. It's up to you whether you want to wait or not. Don't forget, by the time we get the iPad 2, they will already be talking about the release of iPad 3.
Bangkok Essentials for your iPhone
From major temples to young new designer shops, this guide shows you some of the city's most exciting spots to explore.

There are now quite a few guidebooks apps out there for Bangkok and Thailand. Some are better than others. The iPhone/iPad app called Bangkok ✭Essential✭ Guide is certainly one of the better ones. They claim to have about 200 entries that list things in various categories such as entertainment, food & drink, hotels, shopping and museums. 200 may sound a lot but when you consider that there are only 16 listings for hotels then you will realize that this app is far from comprehensive. But, it does have some features that I really like. The question for you is whether it is worth the $2.99 fee.

What I like is that you can quickly find what you want by first choosing a category. You can then view the results alphabetically or more interestingly, by distance. So, for this you will be able to see which hotels or museums are nearest to you. Click through to that listing and you will be given further information which includes photos and a map. It is good that both the phone number and website address is clickable unlike the TAT apps that I reviewed earlier. If you click on the map it will show your position and the location for the listing. It will also mark the route you should take and the total distance. Interestingly, it also attempts to tell you how much it will cost by taxi. In the example at the top it says that my journey into Bangkok will cost only 137 baht. I think you might need to add another 100 baht to that just for traffic alone.
It is a decent app that makes good use of GPS. If you click on the Map tab at the bottom you will see icons for all the listings on the map as well as your own location. A number of the listings also have comments which users can send in. For example, someone commented that the Zen shopping was actually burned down a few months back. It does have a lot of potential and hopefully they will work on adding more listings.
Wireless Speakers for the iPhone

For a while now I have been looking for portable speakers that I can stream music to from my iPhone. I have seen several options come out in America that are wireless and stream music along your network to speakers in any room that you like in the house. At the moment I can plug my iPhone into my sound system in the living room and hear the music there. But, I sometimes want music in the kitchen while I am cooking or in other rooms. Up to now I haven't been able to find any of these devices in Thailand but then at the weekend I came across two Bluetooth enabled speakers. Which, I guess, is the next best thing. These are the Creative D100 (2,930 baht) and the D200 (5,480 baht).

I decided to go for the cheaper D100 option and so far I haven't regretted that decision. It is smaller than the D200 and obviously the sound quality isn't going to be as good. But, this is basically a modern version of the "boombox" so you cannot expect too much. But, I was still happy with the quality of sound and I was able to turn it up as loud as I needed. I also think that the D200 is overpriced for what you get. The main selling point for me with the D100 is that it takes 4 AA batteries which will apparently last 24 hours. This really makes it wireless. At the moment it is plugged into the mains in the kitchen but I have the option to carry it outside into the garden and use the batteries.
The D100 connects easily to the iPhone using Bluetooth. The range is about 10 meters which is quite accurate. You can of course connect it to other mobile phones and also your laptop. Unlike the normal iPhone speakers, with this set-up you keep the iPhone in your hands so you can carry on doing something else like surfing the Internet or using Twitter. What I have been doing is turning up the volume on the speakers as high as they go and then use the volume on my iPhone to control it. I can then scroll through the songs on my iPhone or just listen to my Internet Radio app. So far I am very happy with this and I'm tempted to go and buy another unit.
What do you use to stream music around your house? Do you use AirPort Express or something else? Which is better? Share your tips in the comments.
How to Blog with your iPhone

I have been blogging about my trips in Thailand for many years. Normally I have to wait until I come back before I post my pictures and report. For a long time I have been wanting to be able to post my blogs live. Finally, earlier this year, technology caught up with me. It all started when I decided to buy an iPhone. It was a big jump for me as I had been using a second hand Nokia for years. It cost a lot but I have never regretted the decision. In early March 2010 I started using Twitter for the first time (@RichardBarrow). I still feel like I am a newbie in this game as I have only been tweeting for eight short months. I know I have a lot to learn. But, I really have been enjoying myself.

In particular, I enjoy sharing "live pics" of my trips with the people that I am honoured to be following me. It is nice to have them along for the trips, even if it is only virtually. The next step up from there for me was live blogging from my iPhone. This is what I have been doing over at www.MyThailandBlog.com. Everything on that blog was done from my iPhone. Often while I was still travelling. Many people have asked what applications I use to do this. I have been hesitant to write about it as I feel I am still an amateur in this game. But, hopefully if I share how I do it, then maybe someone else will suggest a better way.

The first app that I use is Photogene ($1.99). This is like having Photoshop on your iPhone. It does everything that I need and more. Some of the basics include cropping and rotating pictures. You can also play around with the brightness and colour to make it look better. If the picture is crooked you can straighten it and also make it sharper. The main reason that I chose this app over all of the others out there is that when you come to save the picture you can choose any size you like. That is perfect for blogging. Pictures on the iPhone are normally very big and my blog only allows pictures with a width of 450 pixels. Photogene will do this for you. The other advantage of resizing is that it makes it quicker to upload the photo blog from your iPhone.

To actually write the blog I use BlogPress ($2.99). I know there is an official WordPress app but I find that only useful for moderating comments. The advantage with BlogPress is that I can use it to post to other blog engines including Joomla which is what I also use. It is not perfect, but it does everything that I need for a short blog. I can type the blog as normal and insert pictures. I then type in the title, choose a category and then either save it as a draft or upload straight onto the Internet. Very simple. You can also add video to the blog and it will be automatically uploaded to youtube. When you post your blog you can set it to notify your twitter and Facebook followers.

Amazing Thailand on your iPhone
The official “Amazing Thailand” application is powered by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). It provides travel guide such as: Destination Guide, Event & Festival, Shopping, Thai Food, About Thailand, etc.

I'm starting to lose track now of the number of apps for the iPhone and iPad released by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). I can understand if they were bringing these out showing different aspects of Thailand. But, this is the third guidebook app for the iPhone released by the TAT. And they all seem to be made by different developers. Why couldn't they just produce one definitive version? Having said that, the Amazing Thailand iPhone app certainly has a lot going for it. From what I can tell, most of the content is taken from their website. The "Destinations" section first gives you a Top 10 which includes Bangkok. This alone is very good and worth your trouble to download this free app. There is also a button for "89 Destinations" which must cover every province plus some major cities. I checked Samut Prakan, which is my province, and I can see it has all the attractions, even the small ones. However, the link to the map for each attraction just goes to the same place. There is also one attraction which isn't even in my province. Hopefully they will work on this later. A big job but it will make it a really comprehensive and useful guidebook app. The other section that I like is the "Events" which gives you an overview of what festivals are coming up. This app is worth downloading and could potentially be very good.
Farang Friendly Listings
Farang (foreigner) Friendly is the definitive list of Thai and foreign owned companies in Thailand that focus on selling to expats and tourists.

One of the difficult things about coming to live in a new country is finding local businesses that can help you with the things that you need. Even expats that have been here for a while sometimes need help. This is because Thailand isn't always "farang friendly" in that English is not used as much as in other South East Asian nations. It's certainly getting better since the time that I first came here, but local telephone directories, including the Yellow Pages, are nearly always only in Thai. Coming to our rescue is this new iPhone app called simply Farang. It is basically a listing of different things from restaurants to hotels and bookshops to ice cream parlours. The listings are not limited to only Bangkok but cover areas all over Thailand. Obviously, as it is still new it is not yet comprehensive, but I was impressed with what they had already. I was also pleased to see that the ones that I was familiar with had an accurate entry.

The best thing that I like about this app is that it takes your present location and will then give a list of places starting from the ones nearest to you. So, in the examples listed above, you can see that The Erawan Museum is not far from my home. Click on the name and you are given information like address, telephone, website, and most importantly, the location on a map. It also shows where you are in relation to this place. That is great, but what happens if I want a listing of all the bookshops in Pattaya before I go there? They might need to think about giving us the option to choose our own location as well. Another small point is that it seems to keep connecting to the Internet each time that I open another listing. No problem for me as I have an unlimited data package. But, not so good for visiting tourists. However, I think this will prove in time to be a very useful app for expats in Thailand. Get it for free in the Thai iTunes store.
Release Date for iPad in Thailand

It has been about seven months now since the release of the iPad in America. So far, it hasn't been officially released in Thailand. However, like many other people, I have already bought an iPad at a store in MBK in Bangkok. Prices have come down so much that it is now comparable to the US and cheaper than the UK. The only disadvantage in buying before the official release date is that you cannot take it yet to the Apple service center if you have a problem. The second problem, at least for Thai people, is that there isn't a proper Thai keyboard. It is true that there are apps to let you type Thai, but then you have to copy and paste what you have typed.
We believe that the reason that there hasn't been an official release of the iPad in Thailand is due to this fact that it is not ready for the Thai market. However, the next update to the operating system (iOS 4.2) will have the Thai keyboard. This has been with the developers for the last two months with a promised release date of November 2010. Yesterday, Apple released the "Gold Master" version of this update to developers which is the last one before final release. This means that iOS 4.2 is expected to be released within 1-2 weeks. At the same time, we have had rumours of an official Thailand release date for the iPad for the end of November 2010. This seems to tie in well with the release of the Thai keyboard for the iPad.

How to Capture Screenshots

It is easy to capture the screen of your iPhone or iPad and then send it to friends by email or twitter. I have used this sometimes to do a screen grab of Google Maps to show people where I am. I have also used it on my iPad to do a screenshot of the front page of the e-version of Bangkok Post or of a picture in order to post on Twitter. To do this is very easy. You don't even need an app. Just briefly hold down the Menu button (A) and the Power On/Off button (B). The screen will flash and you will hear a camera shutter noise. This is then saved to your regular album. You then have the choice to send it as an email attachment, or use a Twitter client to send it out to your followers on Twitter. I also sometimes use the app Photogene which will allow me to rotate the picture, crop and even send it out on Twitter all within the app.
Do you have any tips for the iPhone or iPad that you want to share. Or do you have a question. Send them to us by email or via my Twitter account @RichardBarrow.
