Track your Walks with RunKeeper

Posted on January 31, 2011

RunKeeper uses the GPS technology found in the iPhone to track your fitness activity, giving you comparable results to an expensive GPS watch at a fraction of the cost.

Sometimes when I go off exploring, it is useful to be able to track my route so that I can see where I went on a map when I get back home. It is also useful for me to have a record of how far I walked and how long I took. The iPhone app RunKeeper Pro does all of this and more. It is meant as your personal trainer whether you are walking, running or biking. The app makes it easy to track how far you went, how long it took, what your pace/speed was, how many calories you burned, and the path you travelled on a map.

At the weekend, I went for a walk around Chinatown in Bangkok. My intention was to get a feel of how big the place is by timing my walk around the perimeter. I used RunKeeper to do this. I clicked on "start activity" and left it to run in the background. The app uses multi-tasking so I was able to take pictures as normal and also tweet to my followers as I continued on my walk. I had set it up to give me an audible cue every time I had walked another kilometer. At the end I clicked "stop" and my route was instantly mapped. I was also able to tweet a bigger map from inside the app (see here).

The full price for RunKeeper Pro on iTunes is $9.99. However, for the month of January 2011 it is FREE! So, if this sounds like something that you might use, then download it quickly now!

Thai for Beginners for the iPhone

Posted on January 29, 2011
Thai for Beginners

Paiboon Publishing’s new iPhone app makes it easy to study your Thai lessons wherever you go with your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.

The Thai for Beginners app for the iPhone is aimed at people who are using the popular book of the same name written by Benjawan Poomsan Becker  (buy book online here).  Benjawan has a series of three books for people learning Thai as well as a wide range of resources such as dictionary, CDs and DVDs. I reviewed her excellent Talking Dictionary for the iPhone a few weeks back. Like the talking dictionary, this new iPhone app is based on computer software that has already been released (buy online here). Really, it is aimed at people that have already bought Thai for Beginners as the app gives additional exercises based on this book.

When you first enter the app you are given a list of lessons which refer to lessons in the book of the same name. The introduction gives you a lesson about words with different tones. I think it is good that you get a chance to listen to words with certain tones as that helps to train your ear. You get the choice to first review the words then you get to do the exercises. Here you have a choice to hear and read the words or just read the words. This is the same format for all the exercises. For lesson 1 there are three topics: vocabulary, numbers and sentences. Click on the word or sentence and you get to hear a native speaker. Both female and male speakers are used. The speed is just right. Once you are ready then it is time to try the exercises. Overall, I think this is a useful app to buy if you are already using the Thai for Beginners book and are working alone.

Download Thai for Beginners on iTunes. Present price is $24.99 >>>

UPDATE: You can now use this on your iPad.

This is a handy app for discovering the Top 100 iPhone apps for any country around the world. If you are like me and are always on the look out for new and popular apps, then the AppTop100 might prove to be very useful. It is very simple to use. First choose which country and then whether you want to see the Top 100 for either free or paid apps. The list price for this app is 99 Cents but at present it is free of charge.

There is another free app to help you find new and popular apps which is called Appshopper. Every now and then a $5 app is released for free for only 24 hours. This app will help you find them.

Thai Stock Exchange

Posted on January 26, 2011

For those of you who play the Stock Exchange in Thailand (SET) you might be interested in a new app for the iPhone and iPad called CNSRealtime. It has real time stock information provided by Capital Nomura Securities. There is another free iPhone app called Settrade Streaming which was released in August 2009. It recently had an upgrade. Both of them work in much the same way. As I don't have any experience with the SET I cannot comment on which one is better.

Watch Voice TV on Your iPhone

Posted on January 21, 2011

One of the latest Thai satellite channels has just released an app so that you can watch their programmes live on your iPhone. The free Voice TV app brings you a mixture of news and lifestyle which they say is aimed at the new generation. As well as live TV there is also an archive of programmes that you can watch on demand. From what I have seen so far the quality has been very satisfactory. The majority of the programming is in Thai though there are also some English language news segments. Also integrated into their app are social media outlets such as their Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Watch TrueVisions on your iPhone

Posted on January 20, 2011

It is not often that you get a free app for the iPhone that allows you to watch live television. TrueVisions on Mobile HD does that and more. You have a choice of 15 channels to watch by using 3G, EDGE or WiFi. In addition, some of the channels that are owned by TrueVision give you the option to time shift and watch programs already broadcast. You don't get the full range of TrueVisions channels, just the free ones such as True Sports, True Music, TNN, True Inside and the Thai terrestrial channels. The quality of some channels are better than others. A few of the terrestrial channels were unwatchable for me even when using WiFi. But, it is possible it might be better on a different day. Anyway, it is a free app from True so we cannot really complain.

Free International Phone Calls

Posted on January 19, 2011

Every now and then, an app comes out for the iPhone that immediately jumps into your personal top 10. The kind of app that you makes you wonder how you survived without it in the past. Viber is just such an app. It's very simple in concept. Basically, it allows you to call anyone on your contact list that has viber already installed. The call is completely free and it doesn't matter if they are in the neighbouring town or on the far side of the world. The steps to get it up and running are very simple. After installing you are asked to register your phone number. You are then sent an SMS message with an activation code. Enter this into the app and then straight away your contacts are all imported into the app.

Unlike Skype, you don't need to log in or create a buddy list. As you can see in the top left picture, the contacts that have Viber are already marked. I have four on my list so far. Over the weekend I was out in the middle of nowhere when I got a phone call from my sister out of the blue.  She was on the other side of the world but the quality of the sound was as if she was in the same country. And that was using Edge. Obviously 3G and WiFi is a lot better. I have already used this a lot over the last week to make free calls. It is so much better than Skype as you don't need to log in first. Nor do you need to be both on the same buddy list. If you know someone's telephone number then you can call them for free as long as they have Viber. The developers promise that new features coming soon include texting and ringtones.

UPDATE: You can now send free text messages to your contacts. Also has push notification for this.

HEdictionary English Thai

HEdictionary English Thai HD for iPad

The HEdictionary English Thai has separate versions for the iPhone and the iPad. It can be used by people learning Thai or for those learning English. I think really it is more set up for Thai people learning English. You won't find any transliteration of Thai words (so no good for people who cannot read Thai) and the sound clips are only for the English words. The apps have four built-in dictionaries as well as access to online google translations. According to their press release, the English Thai has 52,000 entries, Thai English 35,000 entries, WordNet 3.0 has 200,000 entries and a Thesaurus with 20,000 entries. If you have already started to learn Thai then it might be useful as you will get sample sentences. It also has Word of the Day. For Thais learning English, they might like the crossword game.  You can also do wildcard and anagram searches in the dictionaries.  You can buy each version of this app on iTunes for the present price of $2.99 by clicking here for iPhone and here for iPad.
