How to Find Free Apps for the iPhone

Posted on February 26, 2011

This app for the iPhone is probably the easiest one I have found so far for discovering free apps. It is called Freed Apps. The full price when it was first released late last year was $3.99 but it has just dropped to free. I don't know for how long so you should be quick if you want it. And that is exactly what this does for other apps. Sometimes developers drop the price of their apps for only a few days just to move it up the charts or for it to get some new reviews. I have even seen some great apps go free for just 12 hours. You really do have to be quick. This app will let you find them in a number of different ways including by categories and top 25 charts. I have only been playing with it for a few days but according to the statistics, I have already saved $54 on the apps I have downloaded so far!

UPDATE: This app is no longer free. The latest price is $1.99

Learn Timestable with Tables Splat

Posted on February 24, 2011

Learning your Times Tables has never been so much fun. No child should ever miss out on knowing something as important as their Times Tables. Tables Splat allows children to develop their speed and accuracy in this fun and enjoyable game.

It is always great to see new apps for the iPhone and iPad that are aimed at educating youngsters. The touchscreen tablets are an ideal tool and this new app called Tables Splat works very well. The concept is simple. It aims to help you memorize your timestable in a fun and engaging way. You start by entering your name and then choosing whether to play the game where you have to choose the answer or choose the missing number in the question. On the next screen you then choose which timestable you want to play. Then the fun starts. You are given 60 seconds to answer as many of the questions as you can. The music that accompanies it is very catchy and encourages you to go faster and faster. There is also a distinctive sound for every correct answer and then another for a wrong answer. There is a score sheet showing your top score for each timestable. I tested this out with some of my students and they really enjoyed it.

You can download Tables Splat from iTunes for 99 Cents >>>

COMPETITION: I like this app so much that I asked the developer if I could have a couple of promo codes to give away to readers of my iPhone blog. To win is very simple. All you have to do is post any comment below within the next 48 hours. Then on the evening of Saturday 26th February I will enter all of the names into a randomizer and the top two will win this app.

This app for the iPhone is a train timetable for the different lines in Thailand. It will give you a list of trains departing from Bangkok and also ones for the return journey. Learn Thai for Free on the iPhone

Posted on February 17, 2011

Learn Thai is a free, easy to use mobile app to give visitors to Thailand a good start to learning the language.

It is starting to be a crowded market for iPhone apps for learning the Thai language. So many have been released of varying quality. I must say that LearnThai clearly stands head and shoulders above the competition. What you have here is a simple Thai phrasebook containing about 200 words and phrases which are useful for tourists. Categories include Greetings, General Conversation, Numbers, Transportation, Directions and Places, and Eating Out. For each of the words and phrases, you can listen to a native speaker by just clicking on the words. A heart shape to the right of the phrase allows you add it to your "Favourites". By default it is a male speaker and so the word "krab" is used a lot, the polite particle for men. However, in settings you can easily change to a female speaker. At the time of my review, I was unable to switch speakers but the developer tells me that is a known bug and it will be fixed at the next update. If you are only going to download one Thai phrasebook from iTunes then I strongly suggest that you choose LearnThai. You certainly cannot go wrong with the price as it is presently free. This app is also available in the Android market.

UPDATE: The problem of changing the speaker from male to female has been corrected in the last update. It works very well now.

Watch BBC iPlayer on your iPad

Posted on February 15, 2011

BBC TV and Radio programmes now on your iPad. Watch and listen live, or choose your favourites from over 400 hours programming from the last 7 days.

One of the most eagerly awaited apps for the iPad is the BBC iPlayer. Up to this point, we could only watch BBC programmes on the browser version of iPlayer. Now comes a dedicated app that makes full use of the touchscreen features of the iPad. Within the first 24 hours the BBC iPlayer app was download more than 55,000 times which isn't bad when you consider it is only available on one device, the iPad, and only for people in one country, the United Kingdom. At this moment in time, the iPlayer will only work if your IP address shows that you are residing within the UK. However, the BBC are planning a subscription based service later in the year for expats living abroad who miss their favourite BBC programmes.

I have been testing out the BBC iPlayer this afternoon and I have been pretty impressed with what I have seen so far. However, there are some limitations. Firstly, you cannot watch TV or listen to radio programmes by using 3G. You can browse the app with 3G but to stream the program you need to be connected to WiFi. The second problem is that the iPad app doesn't allow you to download the programmes. This feature might have been useful for people who want to download programmes before leaving the house or if their Internet isn't always that good. Sometimes I wasn't able to stream anything. The quality of the programmes that I was able to watch were good even at full screen. The sound quality was also very acceptable.

5-in-1 iPad Camera Connection Kit

Posted on February 14, 2011

The Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit is now available in Thailand at iStudio and iLife. The iPad Camera Connection Kit gives you two ways to import photos and videos from a digital camera: using your camera’s USB cable or directly from an SD card. iPad and the Camera Connection Kit support standard photo formats, including JPEG and RAW. The price is 890 Baht which is much better than the 1,300 baht we were getting at MBK last year.

Before I reached the iStudio store, I came across a small shop selling this 5-in-1 iPad Camera Connection Kit. I was curious so took a closer look. Unlike the Apple version, this is a single dongle that has both a USB slot and a SD card slot. It also supports microSD. In addition, it says that it supports connection to a normal USB keyboard. However, I haven't been able to verify this yet. The first vendor wanted 1,300 baht for this device. At the next stall the price was a little cheaper. I suggested 900 Baht as my counter offer and it was quickly accepted. Maybe too quickly!

I used a USB cable, not included, to connect my DSLR camera to the iPad. After it connected, the iPad automatically opened the Photos app. As you can see above, you get an extra tab on the end called "Camera". To transfer to the iPad is easy. Just tap on the photos that you want and then tap the "Import" button. You also have the option to delete the pictures. I was also able to use this device to connect my iPhone 4 to the iPad in order to transfer pictures across.

If I am able to get the external keyboard working then it might be worth buying this knock off. However, as it is the same price, it might just be worth buying the official version. In theory it is better quality and there is a guarantee.

UPDATE: I can now confirm that I was able to get a normal USB keyboard to work with the 5-in-1 kit. It is also confirmed that the official Apple kit CANNOT be used with a USB keyboard.

Watch ASTV and TAN on your iPhone

Posted on February 12, 2011

The วิทยุโทรทัศน์ (Live TV) app for Thai TV channels has been out a couple of weeks and is presently listed at Number 5 in the charts. There are a few other apps out there for Thai television but this one seems to be a little better. You can watch channels like ASTV (presently 24 hours of Yellow Shirt rally), TAN Network (the only English language news channel in Thailand), CH.3, CH.7, CH. 9 and about 20 more. Included in this app are some international news channels such as Al Jazeera, Euronews International, France 24 and Press TV. The quality of the Thai channels are passable but the international channels are often excellent, even on 3G. However, the majority of channels are more reliable if you use WiFi. Judging by the comments in iTunes, some people haven't had much luck while others love it. For myself, I didn't mind spending 99 Cents for this review as I might use it a few times when I am away from home.

Has anyone used any of the other Thai TV apps such as Thai TV and Thai TV & Radio?

Twitter the Smart Way

Posted on February 10, 2011

Smartr's the fastest way to get your news on Twitter. It turns the links in your twitter feed into beautiful, readable content.

One of the main problems with Twitter clients for the iPhone and iPad is that you never know if a link to an article or blog is going to be interesting or not. The only way to find out is to click on the link. However, with Smartr, released in November 2010, you now get to see a page preview instead of links. In the above example of my timeline, on the left is the normal twitter chatter which doesn't have any links to articles. On the right is the smartr version where you see a preview of the articles in your timeline as well as a thumbnail. You can then easily reply, retweet, save to Instapaper/ReaditLater, or post to tumblr/Facebook. You can also tweet as normal in this Twitter client. One nice bonus is that it will remove all those annoying 4sq checkins from your timeline! Download for free from iTunes.
