How to Upload to Facebook Photo Albums

Posted on March 29, 2011

The Album Manager app helps to batch-upload photos to your Facebook photo albums and share your uploaded albums with standard Facebook privacies.

As you probably know, I travel a lot and I often share pictures that I am taking on my iPhone on my Twitter feed @RichardBarrow. However, I often take more pictures than is advisable to keep tweeting. An alternative is to upload them to my Facebook page (Richard.Thailand) where people can more easily see the pictures and also post comments. So, what I have been doing is tweeting highlights during the day and then uploading all of the iPhone pictures to an album on Facebook at the end of the day. The app that I have been using to do this is called Album Manager for Facebook. I have been using the free add-supported version. This works on both the iPhone and iPad.

The app is very easy to use. After logging into my Facebook account, I can choose whether to upload to one of my photo albums or create a new one. I can then select which pictures that I want to upload to the photo album. Next I have the choice to rotate the picture and add a caption. Next it will start uploading. If your connection is broken it remembers which pictures have already uploaded and will continue from where you last left off. There is also the option to delete any of the pictures. It managed to do all of this efficiently and I have been very pleased. The paid version ($1.99) seems to be the same but without the ads.

What about you, what do you use to upload to Facebook Photo Albums? If you don't use Facebook, where do you upload your iPhone pictures to and what app do you use?

The show is taking place now, 25 March to 5 April 2011 at the Challenger, Impact Muang Thong Thani. The apps give you an introduction and history of the show including posters from the past 32 years. There are also photographs of the cars with a promise of more being uploaded during the ten day show. You will also find instructions and maps on how to reach the venue. Most of the information is in Thai but there is also some English as well.

Free Talking Books for Kids

Posted on March 25, 2011

If you have kids and an iPad then you should rush to get these Talking Books while they are free. These two apps, iReading – Stories Collection I and iReading HD – Virtue Education Story Series are both produced by the excellent Apple Tree Books. I have already bought many of their reasonably priced books for Nong Grace. She loves them all. They are beautifully animated and clearly narrated. There are options to turn off the narration if you want to sit and read with your child. These two apps are presently free but you should be quick as I don't know for how long. But, the prices are reasonable even if you have to pay. If you are in Thailand, like myself, then you know how expensive good quality English books can be. These are great for expats living abroad with their families.

In a previous review I told you about iReading HD – Classic Fairy Tales Collection. At $4.99 for ten talking books it is really good value for money. If you liked that one, then you should also consider iReading HD – Classic Fairy Tales Collection II which has just been released with ten more books. This one is only $2.99.

91.5 FM Phuket on your iPhone

Posted on March 9, 2011

The 91.5FM - Phuket Island Radio player is the only iPhone App that broadcasts everything that is going on in and around Phuket, Thailand.

91.5 FM Phuket is said to be the best radio station aimed at foreigners on the holiday island of Phuket. I have been listening to this station on my iPhone the last few days and I have no complaints. Access and streaming has been both fast and of a good quality. As well as music you get Phuket weather and event highlights and also BBC News at the top of each hour. You can also request a song straight from the app. One minor quibble is that it is not multi-tasking. You cannot listen to 91.5FM while surfing the Internet or using Twitter. Hopefully this will be rectified in the next update.

When is iPad 2 Coming to Thailand?

Posted on March 3, 2011
ipad 2

Today saw the announcement of details about the new iPad 2. The release date is expected to be 11th March 2011 in America and about 25th March 2011 for 20 or so countries internationally. No news yet about an official release date for Thailand. The iPad 1 was released in USA in April 2010. We all expected it to then come out in Thailand by June 2010. Although we were able to buy marked-up versions in the grey market at MBK shortly after people in the US, we didn't get an official release of the iPad in Thailand until December 2010. Personally I think the delay was due to the problems with the Thai keyboard. As we now have an official Thai keyboard, hopefully this time we won't have to wait so long. I will post news on release dates here for Thailand as well as prices as soon as I get them.

Although we don't have the iPad 2 in Thailand just yet, they have interestingly reduced the price of iPad 1 in the Thailand Apple Store by 3,000 baht.

New Prices of iPad 1 Wi-Fi version:

  • 16GB Price 12,900 Baht (originally 15,900 Baht)
  • 32GB Price 15,900 Baht (originally18,900 Baht)
  • 64GB Price 18,900 Baht (originally21,900 baht)

New Prices of iPad 1 3G+WiFi version

  • 16GB Price 16,900 Baht (originally19,900 baht)
  • 32GB Price 19,900 Baht (originally22,900 baht)
  • 64GB Price 22,900 Baht (originally25,900 baht)

The iPad 2 looks really great but it doesn't really hold any surprises. It has two cameras, including front facing, so you can now do video conferencing more comfortably. It is also thinner, lighter and of course faster. One thing that is the same is the 10 hour battery life which is obviously great. Some things that didn't make it, but which might be in iPad 3, is the retina screen similar to the iPhone 4 and USB ports.

Now comes the question, are these new features enough to make me go out and buy iPad 2 once it is released in Thailand? Personally I think not. I like the idea of the two cameras but I don't think I would use it enough to justify buying another iPad. The speed is obviously good, but I think I am happy sticking with the original iPad until at least when the iPad 3 is released. If rumours are true, this might happen as early as the end of the this year. But, even if it doesn't, I think I can wait another year or so.

Now comes the question for people who have been waiting to buy their first iPad. Is it best to buy the iPad 1 now at the reduced price or wait for the iPad 2 to be released in Thailand? We don't have official prices for the iPad 2 in Thailand yet, but we are going to presume that they will be released at the same price as the old iPad 1. So, we could be looking at prices like the following. (Of course, this might change if there is a delay in the release and if there is a change in exchange rates.)

Expected iPad 2 Prices for Wi-Fi version:

  • 16GB Price 15,900 Baht
  • 32GB Price 18,900 Baht
  • 64GB Price 21,900 baht

Expected iPad 2 Prices for 3G+WiFi version

  • 16GB Price 19,900 baht
  • 32GB Price 22,900 baht
  • 64GB Price 25,900 baht

If you haven't bought your first iPad yet, I would actually suggest that you buy the cheapest iPad 1 version that starts at 12,900 baht and then wait until iPad 3 like me. Although the cheapest iPad 2 is expected to be 15,900 baht, we might not see it here for another 8 months if it turns out to be the same story as last time.

What about you, are you going to buy the iPad 2?
