Thai Holidays

Posted on January 17, 2012

Some people might find this simple Thai calendar app useful if you spend any time in Thailand. What it does is basically show all of the holidays that we have here in Thailand. As well as public holidays, there are also details on national days. In this example it tells you about Teacher's Day on 16th January. However, it is not comprehensive as it missed Children's Day a couple of days earlier. One nice feature is that you can be reminded about any of the holidays.  The free app is bilingual and is supported by advertising.

Uploading Photos to Picasa

Posted on October 14, 2010

On your iPhone, you can now view your Picasa Photo albums and also bulk upload photos from your iPhone to old or new albums by using this free app called Piconhand - Picasa Web Albums on Your Hand.

For a while now I have been looking for somewhere to upload my iPhone pictures while I am still away on a trip or covering an event. Normally I just upload pictures one by one onto my Twitter stream, but sometimes it is nice for people to see in one place all of the pictures that I took during an event. I first experimented by uploading pictures to my Facebook photo albums. I used the excellent Pixelpipe to do this. However, there turned out to be two problems. Firstly, believe it or not, not everyone has a Facebook account and so some people had difficulty in viewing the pictures. The second thing I didn't like is that it would post on the wall again if I uploaded some more pictures to the same album ten minutes later. Using Pixelpipe I could already upload to my Picasa Photo Albums but it was very limited in what I could do after that. That is when I found Piconhand which I think now solves my problems.

The free iPhone app Piconhand is dedicated for the Picasa Photo Album (free for google account users). When you log into your account you can see a list of your photo albums, both public and private. You can then choose which album to upload to or even create a new album. You then browse to the photos on your iPhone to choose the pictures that you want to upload. As you tap on each picture a green tick appears so that you can see which ones you are uploading. Once they are all uploaded, you can view your album with the options to edit the album info and also add captions and tags to any of the photos. You are also given the option to "share album link" but unfortunately this only sends this to your email programme. Would be nice also nice to share the link on Twitter and Facebook.

You can view my Picasa Photo Albums now and then keep an eye on it over the next week or so as I will be going on a few trips and attending a few events. I will upload pictures to Picasa while still on location at each place. Follow me on Twitter @RichardBarrow for all the latest news about Thailand and also tips on using the iPhone in Thailand.

Atomic Web Browser is the most advanced and customizable fullscreen web browser to date. Experience desktop features including Adblock, Tabs, MultiTouch Gestures, User Agent Switcher, Passcode Lock, Facebook/Twitter integration, Save Page, and much more.

As some of you probably know, I use Twitter a lot and it is important for me to be able tweet to my followers interesting articles or websites that I have found while surfing the Internet. On the desktop that is no problem as google toolbar has a built in button for doing this. However, Safari on the iPhone doesn't have this feature. I know there is a workaround to do this but it will only post a link into your twitter client. So, I was happy when I found this free web browser called Atomic Web Browser Lite that did the job for me.

I have been playing around with it for a couple of weeks and tend to use it more than Safari these days. In addition with the "share it" buttons, there is also fullscreen mode, tabs, various search engines and a lot more. You can buy the full version for 99 Cents which I am thinking of doing for the extra features. If anyone knows of another way of posting links to Twitter/Facebook via a browser then post in the comments.

Twitter for iPhone

Posted on May 21, 2010

Probably the most popular app on the iPhone has been Tweetie which I have been using extensively  during the recent street battles in Bangkok. It enabled me to report from both the frontline and also my office. The company was recently taken over by Twitter and two days ago they relaunched the app under the new name of "Twitter". Not only are there some new features and improvements, many people will love the new price tag: it is now free!

A good new feature is that you don't need a Twitter account to enjoy this application. Also, browsing trends, reading Top Tweets, finding popular users, and checking out public tweets geographically nearby are all possible. I like Twitter because you can have multiple accounts, post pictures, shrink URLs, add your geographic position, store often-use hashtags and search terms and a lot more.

Copying Text to iPhone

Posted on March 29, 2010

There have been a few times when I am working on my computer and I need to copy some text over to my iPhone or at least have it available in the global clipboard of the device. They are a number of ways to do this. The obvious way is to send yourself an email. However, a quicker way is to use this app called Lazy Text. It is free today but I am not sure how long that will last. All you have to do is open a certain page in your browser that links wirelessly to your iPhone. I have it bookmarked so it is quick. Then I type or copy into the box anything that I want sent to the iPhone. On the Lazy Text app, I have the choice to click on tabs to send it straight to my email client, phone, web browser SMS or map. As it is already in the global clipboard, I can also just open the Notes app and paste it there. Quite simple.
